Rain getting your feet wet? Not any more with Sealskinz

Having wet socks is probably one of the biggest nightmares of a rainy day. If, however, you are the kind who likes to be out and about in the country side at every given opportunity, wet socks and feet may just be a harsh reality of life you have started getting used to. It doesn’t have to be this way though. Sealskinz have a solution, and it is incredibly simple and rather effective. Instead of trying to waterproof your shoes, they have given us water proof socks. Oh yeah, no matter how muddy or wet or dirty your shoes are, your feet will be dry and hopefully warm, come rain, shine or snow!

They offer the following specs:

  • Totally waterproof, breathable and windproof
  • Merino wool lining for moisture control & comfort
  • Elasticated ankle & insteps offer support and a comfortable fit
  • Mid weight sock offering the perfect balance of warmth and breathability

The idea is rather simple. They have a ‘seal’ on the inside layer, while the outside is woolly like normal socks. When you put them on, they don’t feel that different from putting on the shoes you get with your wet suit. There is bit of a rubbery/nylon feel to the whole thing, and they feel a bit tough when you put them on. Once on, they feel like any other sock, even though there is a very slight ‘rubbery’ bounce to your step.

Apart from that, they work just like any other socks. Put any shoe on top, and you wouldn’t really notice the difference.

So, how did the ‘wet test’ go? Rather swimmingly, all puns intended. My original intention was to give them a run in a shower, the weirdo that I am. However, luckily the sun ran away and we had a day full of rather heavy rain. As a busy week had been the pre-cursor to this, some leg stretching was needed, and no amount of rain was going to stop this. Specially now that I had the SealSkinz to try.

So off we went, for an hour long walk, and came back, completely soaked head to toe. Don’t believe me? See the image below! I may have damaged those shoes too!

But what about the feet, you wonder? Well, I was rather pleasantly surprised, and very happy to notice that despite being wet all over, my feet felt warm  and dry. There was not an iota of dampness in them, and the whole experience felt rather good. In fact, the best part was how having warm and dry feet despite having wet trousers meant that all was good in the world.

Not only does this mean that any amount of rain is not stopping me any more, but also the fact that you can pretty much wear any old shoes when you go walking in the mud or in wet conditions, as long as they tick the boxes, without having to worry about wet and cold feet.

I am definitely buying more!
