Pixel Robot Jump is probably one of the most tantalizing mobile games you’ll play all year. Yes, that’s a pretty big statement there given that it’s only February, but try it and you’ll see the reason. Other games developers and tapping games fans have already rated it as one of the most difficult games they have played lately, and I am no expert at tapping games, so I will defer to their superior judgement and knowledge.

The latest free Android app from the developer Universal Games, Pixel Robot Jump is a tapping game which comes in at their usual trademark level of fiendish and raises the bar from there. As always, the idea is simple, while the reality is rather different. The graphics are beautiful, in an 80s retro fashion, using only the original 16 colours available on the early home computers. The design of the robot is also 80s retro pixelated, so he shows up in a different colour for each new round. And you will need every single one of those colours to figure the game out.

The chip-tune style music and sounds become almost hypnotic after a while. The idea is to jump the robot out of the incomplete circle as it rotates, then drop him back in again. It’s far more difficult than you’d think though, as he starts drifting upwards as soon as the game begins. Only the quickest reaction will suffice to keep him from squeaking as he bangs his head on the top of the circle. Truly it is ‘fastest finger first’, as the tagline on Millionaire had it.

There is a short video which demonstrates the game, reassuringly showing the player’s score as 0 for the duration. The screenshots scattered throughout this piece give an idea of the colors players will see and the style of the game.

Universal Games is building a solid reputation as a designer of challenging games which look delightful and play smoothly. Pixel Robot Jump has an enduring retro charm but takes full advantage of modern technology using slick coding and fast moving graphics. The tapping game play may not appeal to everyone, but those who enjoy a challenge are likely to find that a few rounds with the robot become an irresistible part of their day. Tapping games enthusiasts will likely find this a worthy successor to Flappy Bird, with equal levels of frustration and addictiveness by turns. Pixel Robot Jump is available now and free to download on Android.
