Create a Living Space That’s Straight Out of the Future

What does the home of the future look like? If you did a Google search for “futuristic home,” the results would not look like anything that actually exists in 2016, and the ones that do probably cost millions of dollars to own.

But the real home of the future retains a classic style while adding modern elements like sleek, slim HD televisions, more attractive computers and workspaces, and home automation to help it all work together. Save yourself the bloated budget and look to these simple styles to create the true futuristic living space.

Evergreen Style

There are some elements of the modern home that will never go out of style. Exposed brick, wood floors, crown molding, and other characteristics associated with lofts and urban apartments will always complement a futuristic living space.

Think about every Instagram or Pinterest account featuring modern homes and living spaces. Even though the pictures feature the latest 4K televisions, home automation systems, and other gadgets, these items all have the same classic backdrop hiding in plain sight. The futuristic living space doesn’t look like the USS Enterprise, it’s simply an improvement on a classic style.

TIP: Don’t let a brick wall go to waste. Mount a television screen or situate electronics (like a computer or stereo) in front to complement old and new.

Electronics

Once upon a time, no more than 10 or 15 years ago, electronics were hideous machines. While ultimately functional for their time, there as almost no thought put into the design of televisions, computers or cell phones. But in 2016 they’re now works of art.

While Apple isn’t the only company making beautiful machines in the 21st century, they certainly led the charge into elegance. Apple is to consumer electronics what USA Today was to the newspaper. Bring your computer out from the corner of your home office and make it a centerpiece in your living room.

TIP: Pair an iMac desktop computer with a simple IKEA tabletop for a minimalist, elegant look.

Less is More

And speaking of minimalist, the living room of the future is certainly absent of clutter. Stereos that were once several large pieces are now condensed into a single cube (and also sound better). Even the iMac, mentioned above, is an all-in-one machine—this is the trend for everything from electronics to furniture for the modern living space—less is more.

TIP: Urban homes and apartments, like in New York or Los Angeles, are perfect spaces for the less is more mentality—usually no carpets to clean or cluttered features.

It’s Time for Automation

While wood floors and classic designs will never go out of style, the real future lives in a home’s nervous system, where automation controls everything from your thermostat to automatic deliveries from Amazon.

Nest, the most popular automatic thermostat on the market, learns your comings and goings and sets your home’s temperature accordingly. This way you’re not overspending on heating and cooling when you’re away at work. And since it was designed by the creator of the iPod, its look will match the theme of your futuristic home.

TIP: Automation is also about the little things. The Amazon Dash Button connects to your home’s Wi-Fi and will automatically reorder an item when pressed. Short on razor blades? Just press the button. Running low on mints? Press the button.
