BRITS IDEAL KITCHEN IS BUT A DREAM

65% of Brits feel that their current kitchen is far from their dream kitchen

26% of Brits have an ‘awkward kitchen’

54% would require a whole new design to create their ideal kitchen

October 2015, London – Glossy brochures and adverts paint the picture of a dream kitchen; with island bars, beautiful work tops and well-lit spaces. However, nearly two thirds of Brits (65 per cent) believe their current kitchen is far from the one of their dreams, new research from Wickes, the DIY and home improvement specialist, has revealed.

Awkward Kitchens

With many across the UK living in tight urban spaces, converted flats or older terraced houses, not having the perfect space is the picture of reality. Over a quarter of Brits (26 per cent) describe themselves as having an ‘awkward kitchen’, with space being the main issue for concern. Kitchen size (36 per cent) came out on top of what is most disliked, closely followed by a lack of storage space (26 per cent) and worktop surface size (24 per cent).

Top Four Things Brits Dislike About Their Kitchen
  1. The size (36per cent)
  2. Lack of storage (25 per cent)
  3. Lack of work top space (24 per cent)
  4. The décor(18per cent)

One in ten Brits (10 per cent) claim that the biggest problem they face with their awkward kitchen is not being able to entertain or being able to enjoy it with family (9 per cent). Furthermore, not having enough space for food or utensils, or space to sit and eat is the biggest problem for a quarter of Brits (25 per cent), with another one in six stating that their lack of space causes their kitchen to get messy and unorganised (17 per cent).

Unhappy Brits

Brits are so unhappy with their current kitchen that over half (54 per cent) would require a design overhaul to achieve the kitchen of their dreams. New kitchen units (45 per cent), new flooring (39 per cent) and more storage space (38 per cent) also came out on top of the new kitchen wish list.

Help is at hand

Over a third of Brits believe that having design support (34 per cent) and installation assistance (32 per cent) would help them to achieve the dream kitchen; with expert kitchen design consultants in every store, help is at hand at Wickes.

Simon Burton, Design Consultant at Wickes, commented: “Kitchens are the heart of the home and the focal point for many families. More and more customers tell us they want their kitchen to help ‘connect’ their busy modern families and that means having the room not just to cook but to eat, meet and laugh!

“It’s always interesting to see the importance people put on space. That’s the very essence of a Wickes kitchen; smart design unlocks a sense of space in ways you may never have imagined.

“Our skilled designers are used to dealing with these types of spaces day-in-day-out. Plus with our dedicated installation service, no matter how awkward you think your kitchen is we can make your dreams come true.”
