The best gadgets for the Nexus 5X

The Nexus 5X and 6P are the latest and greatest phones from Google. Google has worked with LG and Huawei to produce these phones, which is a little different to its traditional approach of sticking to just the one supplier, but there is a lot of value to having two different manufacturers. Both phones feature Android Marshmallow 6.0, and with it they bring the best features that Android has to offer today.

Two new features that are visible on these phones as compared to the last set of phones are the finger print touch sensor, and the USB C port instead of the usual micro USB port that is found on most phones. As such, the traditional set of accessories that you may have collected over the years will not work any more, and you will have to invest a bit more.

We have compiled a set of accessories that we have played with and think are the must have gadgets for your Nexus 5X.

Spigen Thin Fit Nexus 5X Shell Case

Every phone needs a bit of protection, and a case is the easiest way to get that. However, a lot of cases add a lot of bulk, so the protection comes at a price. With phones as big as they already are these days, it is no surprise that there is a demand for extra thin cases that still give you the protection you need. We have been big fans of Spigen cases in this range, and they have a similar offering for the Nexus 5X.

The case is made of polycarbonate, which makes it both light as well as offers plenty of protection. It is also non-slip, which helps when you are using your phone generally.

All the ports are visible and open, giving easy access, and the design gives access to the touch sensor at the back, as well as the protruding camera.

It retails for £12.99 and comes in black, shimmery white and mint.

Overall, it is thin, light, and adds very little bulk. If you want a good and cheap case for your phone, this is the one.

Spigen Ultra Hybrid Nexus 5X Case

If you fancy a bit more protection, and prefer a more rugged case, the Ultra Hybrid Case from Spigen does the job.

This case combines two feature to give you a great protection case. The TPU wrapping around the case protects your sides, while the back is a clear transparent material, keeping the look of your phone intact, as well as giving you full  access to the ports. The case is also made of scratch proof material, which is handy. Soft grip means not only is it comfortable to hold, it is also non-slip. Being soft also means you get extra protection against bumps and drops.

Once again, a great case for those who seek light weight but sleek protection for their phones at a low cost.

USB Type-C 3.1 Male To USB 3.0 Male Cable

One of the weirdest surprises one gets when one opens up a Nexus 5X or a Nexus 6P is the fact that it doesn’t have a micro USB slot. Instead, Google have gone for the better USB C, and rightly so. It allows you to charge faster, as well as transmit data at a lot higher rate than what USB 3.0 is capable of. However, when you look at the charger and cable provided, you will realise that the cable has a USB C connector at both ends, and the charger is also only capable of taking that cable. That means that the stock of chargers you have built over the years at all your possible places (car, office, home, bedroom, home office, etc) are now of no use. Also, you cannot connect your phone to your computer any more, unless you have one of those fancy new Macs, and to be honest, if you do, wouldn’t you have an iPhone?

There is a middle ground, though. You can get yourself the USB3.0 to USB-C cable. Yes, it will only charge as fast as a USB 3.0, and it will only transmit data at the same speed, but it does a couple of things:

  • Allows you to use your usual chargers
  • Allows you to sync, and data transmit using your computer

Both of these abilities are extremely important, and till the day USB C ports and chargers become more common, we definitely need a few of these cables to keep us going.

It retails for £22.99.

Definitely a must have for any body who has any USB C device, be it the Nexus 5X or the 6P, or even the One Plus One 2.

USB Type-C 3.1 Male To USB 3.0 A Female OTG Short Cable

Sounds like a bit of a rant, but another important thing missing on the Nexus 5x (and the Nexus 6P) is a SD Card port. This means that you are stuck with whatever variant of phone you buy. However, not all is lost. Using one of the OTG cables, you can connect a USB disk to your phone, and access media through this. You can even connect a card reader and read your SD cards using this as well. However, it must be remembered that it only works for USB sticks, but not on big ‘portable Hard drives’. The main reason is that those need a lot of current to operate, and it would be unfair for your phone to provide all that power to keep the discs spinning.

Using this, all you need is keeping all your extra media on your USB stick, and just plug this in when you want to access it.

One issue that is noticeable is that you won’t be able to charge your phone while you are using this, so just be careful!

Once again, a must have for anybody who likes to carry a bit of media in their phone, such as films or music.
