Review: VAX Air Stretch Upright Vacuum Cleaner

One may think that house goods, specifically vacuum cleaners are dull affairs. Specially ones that require a ‘human’ to use them and move them and all that jazz. So last century, eh! Not if you like to keep your house clean, and more so, not if you have had a chance to use a good vacuum cleaner. The VAX Air Stretch is out to impress you with its powerful suction, and a very practical and functional chassis.

Highlights

  • Powerful and lightweight
  • 17m reach with long cord (power cord), and a long hose
  • Multi cyclonic for no loss of suction
  • Addition 3-in-1 tool
  • Extendable handle

Look and feel

Quite a lot of attention to detail has gone in this device. While the looks are generally quite traditional when it comes to a bagless vacuum, little touches can be found here and there.

For example, the handle can be extended or contracted by pulling on the little handle near the bottom. The same handle then serves as an extension piece when you want to use the vacuum with the tools to get into your nooks and corners, or do your stairs.

A bit on the right holds on to an extra hose, which means you can connect and extend the reach, while the 3-in-1 tool neatly tucks on the back with the cable.

A handle on the top of the dirt compartment allows this to be carried around. At just under 5kg, it is  a reasonable weight, edging more towards the lighter competitors on the market.

Near the bottom you find a handy instruction which tells you where to push your foot to recline the device, and a sliding tab allows you to adjust for different kinds of floors.

Ease of use

As far as normal upright vacuum usage goes, this is as easy as it gets. You plug this in, press the power button, and off you go. To turn on the rotary brush at the bottom, you just press the button near the top and off it goes too. All you need to worry about is the (extra long) cable, and that is it.

To use the other tools with the handle/hose is a bit more complicated.

You unplug the main hose from the bottom, and then connect it to the extra hose using the clip provided. The other end of the hose then clips to the top of the handle, which can be pulled out from behind the compartment at this stage. This can be extended, and the 3-in-1 tool can be attached on top of it as required.

The 3-in-1 tool offers a brush, a carpet brush for those harder engrained stains, and a thin tube for those pesky tiny places. It attaches easily and can be changed with ease too.

The 17 m long reach

I must admit, I got a bit confused. I expected the hose to be 17 meters. Using it a few times to go over the house though, made me quickly realise that I had made a mistake reading the brochure. Not that any credit should be taken away. The vacuum packs in a 13 m long cable, and the idea is simple. Plug it somewhere central in your house, and off you go. You wouldn’t need to unplug it and go anywhere. You don’t even need to unplug it when you go from one floor to another!

Once again, little details, lots of functionality. Good job there, VAX!

The suction

I have to say, this is one of the most powerful vacuums I have ever tried, and thanks to living in shared houses for a few years, believe me, I have tried quite a few vacuum cleaners! It picks up dirt really well, and the performance is evident based on how quickly the dirt compartment fills up. In fact, the first time I tested this, I went a few square meters just to assess functionality and noise, etc, and I was highly surprised. What followed was an enthusiastic clean of the house, and a very happy wife!

It works well both on wooden floors and carpet, and easily gathers up both dust as well as pesky hair.

So much so that I have already packed my old vacuum away and this one has taken its place.

The stretchable hose

The hose brings the same suction power as the bottom, and allows you to suck out dust from stairs as well as pay attention to corners and hard to reach places. It does so fairly well, though it doesn’t stretch much more than normal vacuums. Of course, the long cable makes up for that.

The noise

Noise wise, this isn’t the loudest device, but it isn’t quiet either. I would rate it average on the vacuum noise scale! It will wake people up, if you are one of those early morning vacuum people.
