CLICK-BAIT HEADLINES, SCANDALS AND OVER THE TOP WHINGING: Are We Fed Up Of It All?

I noticed something yesterday. And it worried me. It worried me a lot. As I was having my daily scroll through Facebook I realised something. Not one person was going for a cheeky Nando’s. Not one. My feed had no messages of people saying they had a ‘messy night’, and not a selfie in sight.

Instead I was fed with share after share of Buzzfeed and LadBible articles. About cats looking moody and 27 times Taylor Swift failed so hard she almost won. What is going on? I thought. Has Nando’s run out of chicken? Has the local Wetherspoon’s been drank dry? Why am I not hearing about evenings of peri-peri and pina coladas?

Click-bait. We just looooove click-bait.

It’s how they get us. Buzzfeed telling us we must read this, four reasons something will change our lives. It’s taking over the internet. Like the selfie stick.

Grossly exaggerated titles are grabbing our attention and keeping us away from tucking into half a chicken and a side of corn on the cob. Endless sequels are averting our eyes to Netflix over the back shelf of a bar.

Ladbrokes’ Lingo Bingo generator is taking a stand against these outsized headlines. And so am I, albeit in a less creative manner.

You see, the Lingo Bingo generator is a headline generator which, unlike past generators, allows users to select from five titles including Facebook, The Daily Mail, Reddit, Buzzfeed, and Hollywood movies.

The posts produced are just as ridiculous as the real titles, and is a great way to fool your friends, and maybe even rid Facebook of unwanted posts.

Perhaps the most fun however is with the mocking of the Daily Mail, with headlines such as, ‘New Figures Reveal Almost Half of Primary School Kids Are Taught That a Burger Is One of Their Five a Day!’

It’s a headline which is just as believable as the over-the-top headlines the newspaper produces, and is a real way to troll the publication.

It’s not that I don’t enjoy these sites; I spend plenty of time scrolling through Buzzfeed. I love Taylor Swift and dogs with little hats. I don’t know. I’m irritable. Maybe it’s because I’m hungry. Cheeky Nando’s anyone?
