Review: Edifier MP211 Portable Bluetooth Speaker

Mp211-1

This capsule or tablet shaped speaker from Edifier brings a great value portable speaker at a great price. Featuring Bluetooth, AUX and microSD card port to have all kinds of music, as well as ability to make and receive phone calls makes this rather feature rich. A great built and a cute design adds to the whole experience.

Look and feel

Almost the same size as your phone (fatter, though), this cute speaker fits well in the palm of your hand. The front shows of the Edifier logo on a grill which hides the speaker, while the top has a range of buttons and the NFC ‘area’ for pairing. The buttons are all rubbery, but big and chunky, and shaped like their functions, making them easy to use. An LED at front indicates what your source is, when the system is on.

The back features the various ports, i.e. micro USB in for charging, micro SD card port and AUX in. There is an on/off button which also serves as a rocker to adjust your music source. AN LED around the micro USB port gives you the status of charge, i.e. red or green. The back has the same grill as front, but there are no speakers facing back. All the ports are well labelled.

The bottom has a couple of rubber pads to make sure this is stable and doesn’t slip off surfaces. A great touch by Edifier is the fact that they have included the whole ‘user manual’ on the bottom in a few lines, making this speaker extremely easy to use.

Light enough to carry in your bag or big pockets, it would be a rather tight squeeze in a trouser pocket.

A lovely range of colours is available, as shown in the picture above, all pastel and bright.

Quick specs

  • RMS 2W x 2 Speakers
  • SNR >= 85dBA
  • Frequency: 200Hz – 20kHz
  • Inputs: Bluetooth/AUX/microSD
  • Speakers: 1.25 inch/40mm units

Ease of use

Big chunky buttons on top and clear labels make this extremely easy to use.

Pairing

Thanks to NFC, the pairing is extremely easy to do. Even if you don’t have that, just search for it in your Bluetooth menu, pair, and off you go.

How loud is it?

Quite loud for a unit this size. Of course, you won’t get the same quality from a speaker this size that you will get from when you turn it to 11.

Sound Quality

Once again, it would be unfair to compare this to a big speaker. However, I have to say I am very impressed with the quality of this. There is a certain warmth to the sound, which means that unlike make many small speakers, there is no tinny sound. A very subtle bassiness to the sound achieves this, but the end result is great. Top marks for tuning this well.

Phone calls

I hardly use such speakers to make phone calls, but hey, it does that so why not! Funnily I have just got off the phone using this, and I have nothing at all to complain. The microphone is sensitive enough for you to have this a few feet away, and of course, it is loud enough to work well in most environments.

Other features

The micro SD is a great touch, and something not often seen on such products. For both that, and Bluetooth, you get full control over music, i.e. Play/Pause, Previous, Next, etc.
