Review: Vax Floormate Cordless

What is it?

Vacuum cleaners are great, everyone has one a home, and they work great on carpets. However, what do you do if you have wooden flooring at home? Vacuum cleaners don’t really work very well on wooden floors, and mopping is quite frankly a difficult one to do if you have to do it regularly. The Vax Floormate Cordless is a hard floor cleaner, specially designed to wash, scrub and dry hard floors, with the additional advantage of being cordless, i.e. it works on a battery rather than being plugged in.

What can I use it on?

Pretty much everything that is flat and not carpet, i.e. all sealed floors. Lino, laminate and wooden floors all qualify, though I have read one person complain that it didn’t quite work well on stoned floors. I haven’t tried that myself, but something to look out for.

Why not carpet?

Well, you can use this on carpet if you want, but it will have the same affect as a mop would. It would probably leave your carpet a bit wet, and probably not as squeeky clean as you want.

Why is that, i.e. how does it work?

This works by applying detergent and water mix (ideally warm water, but you fill it in, so it is up to you) on the floor. The brushes underneath scrub as you do that, and then it dries your floor by sucking up the water and dirt. It has two water vessels, a clean water one, where you fill in warm water and detergent, and a dirty one. They are separate, meaning it is easy to keep it clean.

The box comes with the cleaner, the battery, the battery charger and 250ml of floor cleaning detergent.

Usage Instructions

Interestingly, Vax already have a pretty good video that details all the usage instructions:

I found these to be very accurate, precise and useful.

Usage – the cleaning performance and ease of use

So, how easy is it to use this thing? Pretty easy, though the first few goes help you develop a bit of a knack.

For example, in my first go, I think I used too much water, as I kept the toggle squeezed to get lots of water on. Result? I have a ‘very’ clean bathroom floor. Another result? I used up all of my liquid in one go, in the smallest room of my house. However, it was interesting to see just how much gunk and dirt this picked up just from my bathroom floor.

I started, of course, with my bathroom floor because I wanted to make sure this thing didn’t ruin my wooden floors. I was pleased that there were no marks, no signs of damage, and just a clean floor at the end of the stint.

Next step, hallways. This time I used water and detergent a bit more sparingly, just to make sure that I didn’t use up all 250ml of the supplied detergent in the very first time I cleaned my house with this.

This time I also remembered the instruction. Squeeze to release water while going front, and release while coming back to dry. I ended up going backwards and forwards a few times on certain spots, just to see. It all worked well.

Next step, kitchen. My kitchen has a lino floor, the only room in the house with no wood on the floor. Interestingly, there appeared to be a handy mark on the floor already. Nutella or some chocolate had ‘managed’ to fall down somehow.

This was the best test for this device, so instead of being annoyed, I was actually a little bit excited! On came the Floormate, one-two-three, and voila… it was gone! What you see left there is just some wet patches reflecting a bit funny in the camera.

Satisfied with that, I went on to clean the whole kitchen floor, and rest of the house. It probably took me just over half an hour.

Being cordless is a big bonus, as you can easily move this around the house. Also, you don’t have to worry about any of the water mixing with mains. The battery is promised to last you over 30 minutes, and it definitely did that for me.

Clean up afterwards

The cleaning process is amazingly simple, and easy. Yes, it is definitely heavier than almost every mop out there, and that makes it a bit more difficult to carry, but as far as the performance goes, it is so much better. However, much like a mop, and the instruction video above, it does need a clean afterwards.

I found this part to be a necessary evil of the whole convenience, though it is cumbersome. It would be best cleaned outside if you have a tap, as lots of dirt and gunk gets released when you do. I didn’t have the option, and had to resort to my bath, which meant that I had to rinse the bath afterwards to make sure it was clean.

Verdict

I love it. Having moved to a house with all wooden floors, I have been waiting to try out something like this for quite a while, and the Floormate Cordless does not disappoint. Being cordless is a big bonus, but the best result is the speed at which one can go through the whole house at ease.

The question of, is it worth the £200 will probably answer itself as I use this over the year. If I am as happy as I am right now at the end of a couple of years, I think it would have been worth it. Time is money, and this is a small price to pay for the convenience.
