Review: PearPeel Dual Phone Case

Slider-1
There is probably a million different cases out there. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if there aren’t more. Truth of the matter is, our phones are our pride and joy. They may or may not be fragile, but nobody wants dust, scratches, or a smashed screen. Covers and cases have protected against all that, while simultaneously providing us with a chance to personalize as well as show off taste.
Having said that, cases and covers haven’t really evolved much in the last 15 odd years. At the heart, they always provide basic protection, and that is about it. PearPeel are trying to buck the trend, by introducing something totally new to the market. The PearPeel is a dual phone case, which allows you to ‘attach’ two phones to the case, and then put them in your pocket or your case. It does so in a beautiful leather bound case, giving you both quality, a good taste, and of course, protection.
Designed by British lawyer Doug peel, it is the direct product of his frustration at not being able to carry his Blackberry and Apple iPhone at the same time.
Look and feel
At first look, this looks like one of those passport booklets you see travellers carry, or a slightly longer wallet than usual. In fact, it wouldn’t be too far from a beautiful leather bound booklet. It features Eco Verde leather, which accounts for the premium finish and feel.
On the right side, there is the PearPeel logo, interestingly a Pear picture followed by the word Peel. Inside are the words ‘Made in India’ and ‘Patent Pending’.
Inside, you have a hard fabric separator to separate both your phones, and each side has a Velcro patch. Attached to it, straight out of the box, are Velcro stickers that you can then stick to your phones, and hence add them to your phone.

A good finish promises a premium feel here. However, there are no camera holes in the case sent to us, which means you’ll definitely need to ‘detach’ the phone out when you want to use the camera on it. There are options available, which do have camera apertures in them. There is also a strap option available.
Installation
Two insert a phone into the case, place it first inside the phone to get your placement correct, and then take off one of the Velcro stickers and attach it to the back of your phone, where it stays central in the case.
Interestingly, the case comes with instructions for iPhones and Blackberry, but no love for Android there. They suggest you should have your iPhone on the right and Blackberry on the left, but I am sure you can attach them as and how you like.
Once you have your velcro stickers, you just stick it on, or take it off. The Velcro is strong enough to easily take the weight of your phone. Easy peasy!
Everyday experience
Because of the weight, I often found myself taking the phone out when I wanted to make phone calls, but it definitely makes it easier to carry two phones like that. Based on the shape, unless you have a phone that has a charging port on the side, you can easily leave your phone in there. If your phone comes with a charging port on the side, as long as you make sure it faces outside, it works well too.
You definitely have to take the phones out when you have to take photos. The manual seems to mention holes for camera and flash, but our review sample doesn’t have them. In my opinion, that is definitely the model you should get. It would definitely help if you had those holes.
Otherwise, it is quite good. It gets as thick as your phones are, which depends on your personal choices, and it may or may not work well in your pocket. I tried a couple of Android, and it was fine, though not great in trousers such as jeans.
Making phone calls can be a bit funny, as the other phone, unless folded right behind, puts a lot of weight on you. I ended up taking the phone out to make phone calls.

The separation tab also acts as a stand if you want to watch a movie, or partake in a video conference.
Annoying as this may be, it offers protection when I need it, and makes it easy to use the phone without it when needed.
One of the bigger joys is that you can actually use this with a case already on your phone. CASEception anyone?

Verdict
I love a bit of novelty, and this definitely passes that test. In fact, in a funny little way, it attracts attention, which works if you like that kind of thing. More than that though, it gives you flexibility and protection, while looking good.
