21st century shaming – a gift or a curse?

Shame

Recently I got involved in bit of a hoo-ha on the internet, over what I thought was a harmless comment. I wrote about it and it was published on lostinmobile.com, at the following link:

Since then, I have been interested in the concept of trolling, online debates in general, and the tool that is often used on the internet to great affect, public shaming. There are people who get trolled because they think they are making harmless jokes, or there are people who get trolled because they are rightly being arses, and need some public retaliation to tell them exactly how horrible they were.

Having grown up in a society where shame is the biggest tool used against you, I have often wondered about it too.

Either way, there was a program on Radio 4 yesterday morning that I found to be quite fascinating on the topic.

It discusses the modern concept of shaming, both online and in real life, the pros, the cons, and how shame and guilt have been two distinct things till the recent times.

Since it is the BBC, there is a chance it won’t be available outside the UK, so sorry about that!
