What will you do with an Apple Watch?

Apple CEO Tim Cook informed the world earlier this week that Apple Watch shipping to consumers will begin in April; giving the best indication yet for a release date for the long-anticipated wearable tech.

The starting price for the Apple Watch is set to be $349, so what will a wearer actually be able to do with it?

As Apple’s first wearable gadget, its main purpose seems to be in saving us having to get our other devices such as phones, tablets or laptops out of pockets or bags in order to check on any notifications we may have received since the last time we looked.

Users will be able to interact with the Apple Watch in a number of ways; including by talking to Siri, receiving glanceable notifications and feeling ‘taptic’ feedback. You’ll also be able to see who an incoming call is coming from and decide at a glance whether you’re going to bother answering or not.

Although the watch has not yet been launched, there are an ever increasing number of apps being designed and developed to use with the Apple Watch. The promo video for the watch shows in-built apps including Calendar, Weather, Mail, Photos, Passbook (including Apple Pay) and Camera’s shutter button.

Different commercial apps have already been developed in anticipation of Apple Watch’s release. When you finally get your hands on an Apple Watch, you should be able to track the delivery of a pizza you’ve ordered, find your way around a new town, check out Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, all with a quick glance at your wrist. Gaming at all levels will no doubt also be possible via the Apple Watch, including the kind of real money gaming you find at casino sites such as 32red, Paddy Power and Genting Casino. Currently, you can visit the online tables here on the pc or laptop, or access the mobile games on a tablet or smartphone. Making it possible to spin a roulette wheel from a device on your wrist is the next logical step for the casino gaming industry.

Wearers will also be able to use the Apple Watch to monitor their fitness, and this is where the watch should offer far more than a fitness app on your phone. Something you wear on your wrist won’t get in the way of many workouts. The back of the watch has a ceramic cover with sapphire lenses – these protect the four sensors that are the heart-rate monitor. This gives the Apple Watch a clear picture of your daily routine and activity. There’s also an accelerometer which measures body movement and distance covered can be tracked using the wifi and GPS on your iPhone, so the Apple Watch will make a great health and fitness device.

Apart from the high purchase price, another noticeable downside has already been flagged up about the Apple Watch and that is its relatively poor battery life. This means that users will probably want to charge their Apple Watch every night depending on what they use it for – fine for when you’re at home, but what about when you’re on a 3-day camping trip?

Overall,  it’s probably worth seeing how the early adopters of Apple Watch get on with them before you commit your $349 to it!
