Review: Eyefi Mobi

cards

If you look closely at the image above, you notice the word Samsung on that big chip there. That might explain why Samsung laptops are featured on the Eyefi website! Anyway, where was I? Oh yes! The Eyefi Mobi!

Now, what is an Eyefi card, and what is the Eyefi Mobi?

An Eyefi SD card is much like your regular SD card, but it comes with a built in WiFi network ability. Using that, it can connect to your phone, your tablet or your PC and magically  transfer photos from your camera over to your device.

Eyefi produce two types of SD cards, the Pro X2, which is more expensive, and comes with some extra features but heavier configuration, and the Mobi, which is simpler to setup, but doesn’t support the transfer of RAW images.

Look and feel

Apart from being orange and the labelling, there is nothing at all that will distinguish this from a regular SD card.

Features

  • Built in Wifi allows you to transfer to any device
  • Compatible apps for iOS, Android, Kindle and software for PC/Mac.
  • SDHC 10 speed
  • Optional Eyefi Cloud membership
  • Using same-old Wifi technology means you have a range up to 90 ft outdoors and 45 ft indoors
  • Works with any camera that has an SD card port
  • Comes in 8, 16 and 32GB sizes
  • Works with JPGs and most video formats

Setup

Mobi excels at the setup side of things. Activation Instructions come with the device, and they are neatly hidden inside the packaging. A pair of scissors and a cut later, you get your instructions, and the activation code.

The code is then used to activate your Eyefi Mobi, using their app.

Once connected, you’re good to go.

Daily usage – the WiFi aspect

While some cameras offer extra features, any with an SD port will work with an Eyefi card.

So, what does it do? Simple, as you take photos, by default, it will start transferring photos and videos across to your connected device.

It does not work with RAW files, and some video formats may not be supported. However, that doesn’t mean that the SD card will not ‘hold’ RAW files and unsupported files. No aspect of this SD card is unlike any other SD card. It simply offers more. A lot more.

Some cameras, which are designed to be used with Eyefi cards offer more features. They allow you to select which photos to push, etc.

So, how is this any different to any other ‘wifi-enabled’ camera? Well, it is all about the ease of use. This does its thing automatically. No manual handling or copy pasting required. No selection. It just works.

The SD Card aspect

I can talk about speeds and performances, but basically, it gives you SDHC Class 10 performance. If you know what that number means, then you know if it works for you or not.

Simply put, it offers good speed. However, if you have a camera with extremely high speed burst mode, you may struggle to save all your photos at once. Your camera may have to take a breather every now and then.
