Review: STM Drifter Medium Laptop Backpack

It’s not often that I get a text from my wife saying that she really likes a review item. It is even more rare if she says that can she try it. The STM Drifter, ladies and gentlemen, was that rare occurrence.

A laptop bag designed for 15″ laptops, this one is made to look like a smaller hiking bag, i.e., it is long and thin, with enough room and lots of pockets everywhere. The unique shape does give it some added benefits, though it does add a bit of bulk to it as well. The thinness does limit the room inside too, but it all depends on what you really want to use this one for.

With plenty of pockets on the outside, you have enough room to both categorize and organize all your daily usage items.

Inside there is room for a laptop, and a tablet, and other items such as chargers, and your daily needs, such as note books, pens, and in my case, waterproof trousers, and various bits and bobs.

Speaking of waterproof, it also comes with a built in waterproof jacket, which gives you plenty of protection against the elements. The sudden downpours we have been having this last week have given me a good chance to try it out, and it works as expected.

Probably the most important thing about a good backpack is how it feels on your shoulders, and your back.

The backpack works quite well in that regard, though I think I found it a bit tight to begin with, before I got used to it. Adjustment is of course available, and it has stretchable straps to latch in front of your chest, making sure that the weight is divided all along your back rather than just your shoulders.

The extra padding also means that the bag doesn’t just stick to one part of your back, meaning that there is less of those sweat patches. Mind you, with the weather as it is, there will definitely be some!

Talking of padding, probably the best part is how soft and padded the inside is, giving you both a comfortable feel to touch, and the peace of mind. Great colours also mean that you can happily use this whether you are cycling into work, or just out with your mates.

Some basic specs for the bag are as follows:

  • Three zips which give access to front panel pockets: Top, for sunglasses/phone, middle for keys/wallets, bottom for pens and business  cards/docs etc
  • Top load main compartment for 15″ (padded), plus a slip tablet pocket with cord and battery storage
  • See through zipper pocket for all other items
  • More capacity in main compartment for general items
  • Reflective light loop for better night safety
  • Side pockets for water bottles, etc
  • Padded shoulder straps and back
  • Water resistant fabric
  • Built in pocket holds rain cover
