I love collaborations. They give us fun stuff like the Nike Fuel Band, the Nexus tablets and phones, as well as a lot of magic that Disney come up with.

Proporta have just sent me a result of their collaboration with the surfing based company, Quiksilver. The passion and branding is obvious from the logo, and the subtle, not so subtle, message inside.

So, what is it really?

It is a hard shell case, which promises to give you the best of protection with the minimum addition of weight as well as thickness. Thin and light, it does deliver what it promises.

It also features a funky design, probably thanks to Quiksilver.

So the big question is, can you take this surfing with you?

Theoretically yes, just like you can take your laptop, iPhone, car keys, or pet rabbit surfing with you. However, if the question is, will it protect my phone while I indulge in the act of surfing (or trying to stay afloat, depending on how good you are), then the simple answer is no. While I haven’t tried, I don’t even see an indication that it will make your phone ‘float’. Probably don’t want to try that either!

So, how well does it work as a case?

Quite good, and not much to report. It is hard, yet thin. Meaning it gives you enough confidence to make you want to put it on, but doesn’t add enough bulk that you wouldn’t want it on your phone. The message inside is a good touch, though it will probably not be seen again once you have put the case on.

The ports are all exposed properly, so there are no problems plugging your charger or headphones in.

The buttons are also exposed instead of being covered, which is how I personally prefer it. That means that you can access them how Samsung intended to, rather than through a layer of plastic or rubber.
