Review: Henge GRAVITAS

And the best thing about it is the weight! It is really heavy!

You might think those words are not the best sales pitch ever, but the friendly chaps at the Henge stall had a point. How many times have you had to pull out your device from its dock, with the dock coming up with it? This is exactly the kind of thing the Henge team were trying to address. It is a whopping 1.2kg though, which makes this the heaviest dock I have ever tried!

So, what is this? A dock that offers a lightning connector, and hence allows you to dock, and hence charge any iDevice which supports the lightning port. A range of inserts means that any and every compatible device will fit perfectly, and a cleverly placed indentation lets you press the Home button when your device is docked.

So, a heavy dock that stays put, and lets you charge your iDevice. What else? Well, this is a complete product. It also features an 3.5mm output, which allows you to connect headphones, or any speakers to your dock. That means that not only can this let you charge, this also allows you to play your music. Yeah, they may have thrown in a speaker or so, but why put in a bad quality or a small and cheap speaker when you can have a perfect product otherwise!

So, how well does the whole thing work? Quite well actually! The weight does add another dimension to the dock, which means that every time you lift up your iPhone, iPod or iPad, the dock doesn’t come up with it. The AUX output works as well as you’d expect, and the USB input in the back means that you can also plug this in wherever you want: your computer, your Apple charger, or something else on the go.

The added weight does mean that this is probably not the kind of dock that will travel with you, but it will definitely become a permanent feature on your work desk, or bedside.

Add to the functionality the beautiful look and feel of the device, and you get a lovely product. The Apple-isque finish that Henge have packed into the device makes it a perfect match for your device. It looks like Aluminium, but a special allow gives it the weight, without taking away any of the premium feel and finish.

So, what more do I ask for? A micro-USB  connector version too, please!

A slight niggle, if you may, is that when the iPhone is docked, you may find that the touch ID sensor may struggle a bit, because your thumb may not be the best angle.
