Samsung and Google sign a 10 year patent deal

In a decision which is fairly clever in our eyes, Samsung and Google have announced a long term partnership spanning a period of 10 years. This includes a broad range of technologies and business areas, as well as patents filed over the next ten years.

“We’re pleased to enter into a cross-license with our partner Samsung,” said Allen Lo, Deputy General Counsel for Patents at Google. “By working together on agreements like this, companies can reduce the potential for litigation and focus instead on innovation.”

This paves the way for both companies for deeper collaboration on research and development for future products and technologies.

“This agreement with Google is highly significant for the technology industry,” said Dr. Seungho Ahn, the Head of Samsung’s Intellectual Property Center. “Samsung and Google are showing the rest of the industry that there is more to gain from cooperating than engaging in unnecessary patent disputes.”

We definitely agree, and we think more companies should make such agreements, specially when they operate on mutually beneficial businesses. I suppose Nokia and Microsoft were one such example, and we may see more in the future.
