BassBoomz

What is it?

A Bluetooth portable pocket sized speaker, with quite literally, a twist! The speaker can be twisted open or shut to give you enhanced Bass thanks to their Bass Expansion System. It features both Bluetooth compatibility as well as AUX In for universal compatibility.

Look and feel

These are produced by BassBuds, who are a fashion focused consumer electronics brand, and pride themselves in making stylish products. Hence, the speaker has a beautiful chrome finish, and feels really solid in your hand. The logo can be seen on one end of the cylinder, which hides an LED (on, battery low, charging), while the back has Line In, a mini-USB port to charge it, and an On-Off Switch.

The speaker can be twisted open or shut (though be gentle, as the manual warns!), and opening it unveils the BXS, their Bass Expansion System, and believe you me, the bass that this tiny little speaker delivers is quite impressive!

The base also features soft grip feet so it reduces vibrations on hard surfaces, though personally we quite like feeling our music.

Pairing

As simple as it gets. Turn it on, scan for it, pair it, and enter the passcode.

Compatibility

Universal.

Ease of use

It is relatively simple to use. To turn on, just flick the switch in On position, and off you go. All control is done via the device you are playing from, so whether it is an Auxiliary input, or whether it is Bluetooth, that is the master. You have no volume control, or such like. The only control you have is the ability to turn the bass on or off.

The sound

This little speaker is extremely powerful. While it is quite loud in it’s ‘normal’ mode, twist it open and prepare to be amazed. Yes, this will not beat that £200 speakers you have set up in your living room, but the sound quality is quite impressive for what this weighs and the space it occupies. At very loud volumes, we did notice some distortion, but that is expected from such devices.

What can be improved

This uses Bluetooth 2.1, which is not the latest technology when it comes to Bluetooth, and tends to use more power. So that would be an obvious room for improvement, but I am sure that can be easily done. If I really want to be picky, I’d like to add something like a volume control feature on it, though that purely depends on what you play it from.

Extra features

One of the extras included in this device is the fact that you can get two of these together to set up a stereo speaker set. However, the cable for that is sold separately.

Buying information

These retail for under the £50 (but close to) mark, and can be bought from their website, or through retailers such as Amazon. They are also available from the flagship Selfridges in London, as the 9 Harvey Nichols stores in the UK.

You can find buying information, as well as general information about the speaker at the product page:

Verdict

A speaker that looks good, is tiny, portable, and packs in quite a powerful punch. This is the kind of thing you can throw in your bag, forget about, and bring out whenever you want to pump some tunes.
