What are these?

These beautiful, stylish, and extremely comfortable headphones are Onkyo’s On-Ear Headphones. Unlike a lot of many other similarly specced devices, these actually have no inline remote, or built in microphone. However, the headphones ‘speak’ for themselves.

Look and feel

The first thing you notice about these headphones is how good they look. The speakers feature an interesting design, which makes you think that they might be imbalanced, but actually, you don’t notice anything as far your head is concerned. All the metal has a beautiful brushed finish with the Onkyo logo engraved in it, like a proud badge. Cushioned leather cups follow a similar colour, and fit in well with the feel of the headphones. There is also the cushioned pad to make these comfortable on top of your head.

All this metal actually makes these look and feel quite tough, and that is a good peace of mind to have.

Interestingly, they feature a tangle free cable which comes detached from the headphones. The idea is that you can upgrade the cable, and/or replace it if required. Sounds a good idea, and while you get this kind of a setup in some premium headphones, this is new for something in this price range. Having said that, it is a one time attachment, and they are clearly marked left and right, so it isn’t a worry at all.

They are also very light, and can be neatly folded, within the included bag, and hence can be easily carried about.

The cable

The cable is an interesting part of the whole design. The semi-transparent cable is supposedly built with no Oxygen in it, giving you the best possible connection. This means that your sound travels nicer and cleaner to your ears, and not much gets in the way. While we aren’t able to compare this with other cables that fit this, the end result is definitely sweet!

Sound quality

If you haven’t guessed it already, the sound quality on these is amazing! In fact, let me show you how Onkyo imagine you to feel when you put these on:

Jokes apart, I have been seriously impressed with these headphones.

First of all, they fit well around your ears, giving you a great noise isolation, meaning you get an immense drop in background noise straight away.

Then there is the extreme detail that you can just hear in the music. Listening to some guitar solos, some jazz, or just some classical pieces? These are the headphones for you!

Special attention has been put into enhancing the bass, and you can definitely feel it when you turn it up. Then there are the vocals, the instruments, and everything else. It all makes a very powerful audio experience indeed.

Comfort

I am very critical about how comfortable headphones are, and I can happily report that even after a few hours of wearing these, my ears are happy bunnies (see what I did there?). They are light, comfortable, and the cups go perfectly around your ears, not putting any stress at all on your ears.

Price

These can be found at Amazon, for £179, direct from Onkyo:

Verdict

The price may sound high, but for the lower end of the premium range, these headphones actually deliver an amazing sound. The beautiful finish and comfort just add to an amazing experience. All in all, it adds up, and you get an amazing set of cans without paying the £250+ prices.
