Review: Netatmo Wireless Weather Station

Netatmo

What is it?

As is obvious from the title, this is a weather station, but unlike regular weather stations, this packs in quite a few features, and makes full use of your wireless internet, as well as your smartphones. It connects to your system/phone and can be accessed via any browser as well. It not only gives you temperature and humidity, but also measures CO2 concentration, sound and pressure, both indoors and outdoors.

Setting up

The set up is fairly straight forward. First of all, you plug the base unit (the bigger one) in your computer via the USB cable provided. Using this, you can set up Wifi for the unit, and create an account to be associated with that device. Once this is done, you’re pretty much good to go.

At this stage, you put some batteries in the outdoor module (the smaller one), and leave it outdoors in a shade (away from rain), and park the indoor module at a point in your house where you’d like to monitor the conditions.

Once set, you can access the information in forms of numbers and graphs via your computer (through a browser) or through your smartphone/tablet (via apps).

Information available

As already mentioned, the information available is the following, both indoors and outdoors:

  • Temperature
  • Humidity
  • Pressure
  • Sound Meter
  • CO2

Together, all of these can indicate to you about your air quality.

You get data in terms of graphs, on an hourly, daily, weekly or monthly basis.

You also get other information, such as weather prediction for the week too.

Notifications

Perhaps the best part of this is that it can be programmed to send you real time alerts. For example, having trouble sleeping? There might be the need to open the window because the air inside is too stuffy (high CO2).

What if I want more rooms?

You are not restricted to the one set that comes in the box. You can buy more modules, and connect up to 3 more to your set. These need to be bought separately of course.

What if I don’t want to use an app or computer?

Sadly, there is no display on the device, so you will need some way of accessing that information. This is probably the only bad thing about this unit.

Buying information:

While you can buy this directly from the website, you can get a better price from their own Amazon Shop:

Netatmo Weather Station From Amazon

The general retail price is £139, but at the moment it is going for £114.02.

Once again, the additional module can be bought direct, but it is cheaper from Amazon at £59: Additional Module for Netatmo Weather Station

Verdict

Being a nerd, I am a big fan of numbers, stats and graphs. So a weather station that gives me so much information is right up my street. Since it also gives you alerts, such as an opening of window may be required, it goes from being just interesting to actually useful. The only issue I found was that it definitely needs some way of accessing information, and needs a running Wifi connection. Otherwise, for this price, all those sensors give you a great package.
