Qualcomm jump into the Smartwatch race with Toq

Technology events such as IFA are never complete without a surprise or two, and today’s biggest one came from Qualcomm, the producer of the Snapdragon processors found in most smartphones as of now.

They have just announced a smartwatch of their own, called Toq.

This will be the first watch to have a permanently on display, and this will be thanks to Qualcomm’s own Mirasol display technology, which is a bit like a coloured E-ink display. This does mean that it needs external lighting for you to be able to see it, but as watches have proved over the last century or so, that is not a problem.

Much like other players on the market, this will work with your smartphone (Android now, iOS later) via Bluetooth, and also Wi Fi. You can read emails, see texts, but responses would be limited, based on what you have already pre-programmed.

While price and availability is the main question mark, we would really like to know about battery life. They reckon it will last up to 5 days, which is better than the Gear already (25 hours), but what does that actually mean for the user? I suppose we’ll just have to wait till we find out more!
