Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7″

2013-06-09 14.34.22

As of now, we are definitely spoilt for choice when it comes to 7″ tablets, and even more so if you only concentrate on the Android ones. There is, of course, the Nexus 7. Then there is the range from Asus, Acer, and almost everyone else. Samsung, of course, are never shy of playing a big hand in everything, and they have a similar stance when it comes to having tablets. If you look at their range, they pretty much have one for every occasion.

Here we have a look at the Galaxy Tab 2 in the 7″ flavour from Samsung.

In the box:

  • The tablet
  • USB Cable
  • UK Charger with USB Socket
  • Product documentation

Quick feature list:

For a tablet that was actually released prior to the Google Nexus 7, this packs in a fairly decent list of specifications. In fact, for a tablet that is about 1 and half years old now, it is still a very good buy. Here is a quick look at the specs:

  • Available with SIM version
  • Jelly Bean OS, with TouchWiz UI from Samsung
  • 345gm
  • Plus LCD screen
  • 600 x 1024 pixels (170 ppi)
  • Micro SD card slot
  • Dual Core 1GHz processor
  • Rear camera (3.45MP) and VGA front camera
  • Vibrates (not many tablets do)
  • Has its own interface instead of the usual micro-USB now being used for charger
  • Stereo speakers

Look and feel:

As expected from most Samsung products, this looks and feels good. At 345g, it is quite light to hold, and easy to carry. It features a power button and volume control keys on the side, and the speakers and the slot for charger/connection at the bottom. Both front and back have cameras. A nice shiny finish on the back. The screen itself is not on par with what we have come to expect from our phones and tablets these days, but bearing in mind that this is about 1 and a half years old, it isn’t too bad.

Performance:

So far we have tried most of our usual apps on this, and it works a treat. The TouchWiz UI is exactly the same experience as you get on most of your Samsung phones, including the Galaxy S4, so this is very easy to get into. Being Android, it is also happy to pick up your contacts and other settings from your GMAIL account.

The vibrate feature is interesting, as most tablet manufacturers have avoided this for a long time.

As far as games and general work goes, this tablet is quite good. Like mentioned earlier, you miss the extra pixels, but it is probably because we are spoilt these days.

This tablet is also very handy for reading in the train, typing general emails, and everything you’d associate with tablets.

Verdict:

If you’re in the market for a tablet that is easy to buy and no-frills setup, and is cheaper than most others, this is definitely a good choice.
