Dual colour LED flash for iPhone 5S, spotted on assembly line

The iPhone 5S is widely expected to be the next iPhone released by Apple. While rumours still swirl about a potential lower-cost iPhone (retailing for $99 with contract in the US), the 5S seems a lot surer of a thing. Case in point is a recent rash of leaked photographs, obstensibly from assembly lines already working to produce the phone.

So what do we know about the new phone from these leaks? Well, the headline feature so far seems to be a new dual LED flash. This would be a fairly significant departure from the camera system found on earlier iPhones, but additional details released this week tell a more interesting tale: each LED has a different colour. With each color being optimised for a different low-light situation, it’s possible to achieve better low-light stills that’d be possible with a single generalist LED. Both LEDs could also be used in tandem to produce both the brightness and effective range of the flash.

Otherwise, we’ve seen a few things but nothing has been confirmed. There’s reportedly an 8% larger battery (standard for a new Apple release) and the phone is suspected to use a more powerful A7 chipset (again, as is standard for an S iPhone release).

We’ve also seen what could be the front of the iPhone 5S on an assembly line, identified by a new front panel connector that’s leaked earlier. That’s not interesting in and of itself, but it does indicate that the iPhone 5S could be entering full-scale production.

The amount of leaked iPhone cases is also increasing, so that again would suggest that an announcement can’t be too far off – likely this quarter.
