Review: Case-Mate Olo Glacier for iPhone 4

By Jen
My neighbour’s first words were “Wow, that is a gorgeous case – what a beautiful colour. And so sleek!”
All I did was check a text message. I hadn’t otherwise drawn any attention to the phone.
So went the first few days with the Case-Mate Olo Glacier (in Cyan).
I am really not a phone case person. In fact, this is the first case I’ve kept on my iPhone 4 for more than a day. And the poor phone has paid the price. The camera lens is all but destroyed, the back is covered in lines, the brushed aluminum sides are dinged up, and the front even has a tiny pit out of it.
I have never dropped the phone (touch wood), but often throw it in a pocket or handbag with keys and junk, assuming it’ll be fine.
After using the Glacier for a week, I am wondering what kind of idiot I am. Because for £8, I could’ve prevented a lot of that damage.
Now, the only tiny shortfalls are that the camera and front screen are necessarily still exposed. They wouldn’t have been saved from the tyranny of the pocket change. Add a screen protector cling, and you’re all good.
What I am most surprised about, though, is how much I like having this case on the phone. I tried a few other hard-plastic cases, and they are a giant pain to get on and off. They also don’t often wrap the entire phone, so leave some sharp edges that can catch on pockets or just interrupt the design of the phone.
Because the Glacier case is soft plastic, it moulds around the phone, gently wrapping around all the edges. It still has a very low-profile, and doesn’t get caught on anything while going in and out of pockets. It also provides the tiniest bit of traction for holding onto the phone: I have these smartphone gloves, and because the uncovered phone is so slick, I was always a teensy bit nervous about dropping it while wearing them. I have a much better grip (and some extra protection) with the case on.
So, thanks Case-Mate, for making such a cheap & cheerful case, and I’ll certainly make a new case one of my first stops if (when) I upgrade to the iPhone 5.

  1. Nice case, but I prefer the Pong Research case. I read that the cell phones emit a dangerous non-ionizing form of electromagnetic radiation; radiation which can be absorbed by the tissues and cells which come into close contact with the phone. That’s why I decided to do something that reduce iPhone radiation levels for protect to my family. I read about Pong Research cases, Pong technology is custom-designed for each mobile device and works to redirect radiation away from your head and body. I hesitated about it, anyway, I bought a case Pong because is the only technology proven in FCC-certified laboratories to reduce the exposure to mobile device radiation by up to 95% below the FCC limit without compromising the device’s ability to communicate.
