Google Reader is retiring

While the biggest news today might be the Galaxy S4, the biggest impact will probably be by the little message we saw earlier today when we signed into Google Reader.

Personally, I have used and relied on Reader since 2005 if not earlier, signing in almost every day to catch up on my favourite technology websites, blogs and not to mention comics. RSS feeds have made life great if you want to get all your information together and Reader was definitely one of the best ones out there.

So yeah, we are definitely sad to hear the news. Do you or did you use it? What are your thoughts? And why are they pulling it, despite being so popular? Are other Google services on their way out soon too?

We are trying out some other alternatives, and will hopefully publish a list of alternatives or our preferred choice soon. Meanwhile other websites are putting up some alternatives already.

  1. I switched to Feedly a while ago, because I like the app experience better on iOS devices (Google Reader in mobile Safari is ok, but not great), and I really like it. Considering I’ve tried and ditched a number of RSS readers in the past, because Google fit my reading style best, that’s pretty high praise for Feedly. And they’re cloning the Google RSS API, so should have a pretty good transition ready to go before July.

  2. I have actually started using that today as an alternative! The interface is definitely more streamlined than Google Reader, and yet it seems to keep all your information intact. Will probably do a small article on it at some stage too.
