The perils of liquid damage, and the solution…

Gone are the days of Filofaxes, diaries, and memorizing numbers. Unless you avoid mobiles, or make an extreme effort to stay away from it all, you carry around with you in your pocket or handbag a wealth of data. Contacts, numbers, appointments, emails and sometimes even vital information like bank details and such like. Then there are tablets and laptops, and they can contain information which ranges from all kinds of confidential to extremely valuable. Blue prints, contracts, designs, that report you have been working on all weekend.

Yet all it takes to destroy days, or sometimes even months worth of effort is that cup of coffee you spilt on your device. Rain, puddles, kettles, splashes, spills, they all contribute. The science about what exactly happens when you spill water on a device is beyond the scope of this article but the short answer is oxidization. It is the equivalent of getting rust on your tools. Sometimes they work, sometimes they break, and sometimes they just get stuck and are unpractical to use. The same thing happens with your mobile. If you are lucky, you may be able to wipe it off, and that is the end of that. But if the water gets anywhere near the components, it is often too late, as the devices these days are so well packed that once something gets in there, it is hard to get it out. Add to that the heat inside the devices, and it is all helping chemistry. You can kiss that promotion, and that data good bye.

Not all is lost though. There is help. There are technologies out there that can actually protect your device from liquids. In fact, such technologies have been used by military for years now. One such company that specializes in these technologies is found in our very own Oxfordshire. P2i (http://www.p2i.com/) specialize in a special nano-technology which coats materials in a special nano-meter thick layer of liquid repellent stuff. This layer is actually molecularly bound to the coated surface, so it does not wash away. Which means that a spill of coffee or water or splash of a rain will not harm your hard work, your expensive technology or your precious contacts.

Aridion, http://www.p2i.com/aridion, their technology that focuses specially on electronic products. It not only promises to reliable and durable, but also applies a liquid protection layer on your device which is invisible. That means there is no dark tint on your screen, or a yellow greasy colour on it.

P2i are also featuring at the Mobile World Conference this week. Watch out for them among all the geeky amazingness.

What this means that soon, very soon, once the technology is taken over by different device manufacturers, we would be taking our Kindles to the bath, doing our emails in the rain, and stop being OCD whenever we have a coffee or tea near our work. Peace of mind, you cannot put a price on that. Add to that the time and money saved in the whole process, and it all just works great. With P2i, the technology should be becoming common soon, and that would be a good day!
